Properties of Chrysoprase
Chrysoprase, commonly referred to as Australian Jade, is a green variety of Chalcedony that contains trace amounts of Nickel. Its structure is cryptocrystalline, indicating that it is composed of numerous tiny crystals that are not visible to the naked eye. This gemstone was first discovered in 1844 by J.D. Dana, who named it based on the Greek words for “gold” and “green.” In ancient cultures, Chrysoprase was often called “the Stone of Venus” and was widely used in jewelry and as a material for carving and sculpting, appreciated for its striking beauty. A notable historical anecdote suggests that it was a favorite gemstone of Alexander the Great.
