Fossil coral is a beautiful natural gemstone that forms when ancient coral gradually gets replaced with agate over millions of years. These corals are marine animals, and it's their skeletons that get fossilized and preserved. The process happens as silica-rich waters deposit minerals that harden into the stunning patterns we see today, and it can take over 20 million years to complete.

You might hear fossil coral called "agatized coral" or "agatized fossil coral." Since agate is made of silicon dioxide (SiO2), it's actually a type of chalcedony—microcrystalline quartz—rather than a coral itself. So, don't confuse fossil coral with reef coral or precious coral from endangered species. Fossil coral is often much harder than precious coral and usually has a lovely dull or waxy shine, often showcasing intricate skeletal patterns that resemble ancient coral shapes, sometimes even looking like delicate flowers.

On a more spiritual note, many people believe fossil coral is a grounding stone that can help inspire positive change. Some also think agate has healing properties, especially for pancreatic issues, blood and air circulation, as well as eye, skin, and stomach health. There's even a belief that it can boost longevity.
